Victory for Peugeot last year at the famous Nürburgring
|
For the fifth time, the Le Mans Series contenders will continue the 1000km of Nürburgring tradition. It is a tradition which began on the famous 22.8-kilometre Nordschleife track, the longest circuit ever built for racing back in 1925.
In 1984, the 1000km of Nürburgring event began using the portion of track built for Formula One. At 5.148 kilometres, it is much shorter but most importantly much safer, although the modern circuit must still make do with the unpredictable climate of the Eifel region which has a tendency of changing many race strategies...
As it is now a rendez-vous which cannot be overlooked. Included on the Le Mans Series calendar from the very beginning, the Nürburgring racetrack carries a unique taste for organizers, teams, drivers and the media alike.
Remember last year: Marc Gené is the poleman after the qualifying sessions, but Pedro Lamy and Stéphane Sarrazin finish the race on the top of the podium.
It was their second victory, and they went on to win the season's crown a few months later in Brazil. The Pescarolo team signed a very good third place when the RML team won the LMP2 class.
Stéphane Ortelli, having recovered from his injures, will be making his big comeback in the Le Mans Series on the German circuit. Ortelli won the LMGT1 race at the Nurburgring in 2007 with Oreca, before the team invested itself into the prototype adventure.
After one-two results from Audi in 2004 and Peugeot in 2007, a Zytek victory in 2005 and a win from Pescarolo in 2006, which team will add or renew its name on the list of the Nürburgring conquerors?
The race week-end will take place from 15th to 17th August.
